You’ve probably heard a hundred times about the high level of water contamination caused by industrial pollutants over the last several decades. But now environmental scientists are telling us that prescription drugs in drinking water are becoming a new threat to our health. By the time you finish reading this you are going to have four, eye-opening facts about drugs in the drinking water you must not ignore.

Fact #1 – The EPA and the National Geological Survey have verified the presence of prescription drugs in drinking water.

Samples from numerous water supplies from around the country have turned up trace amounts of drugs such as anti-depressants, antibiotics, contraceptives and caffeine. Since everything that passes through our bodies eventually ends up in our water supplies, it only stands to reason that all the medications that are taken on a daily basis in this country will make their way into our drinking water.

Since we have a finite supply of water on this planet, it has to be continually recycled and reused. As such, there is a high probability of exposure to these waterborne pharmaceuticals.

Fact #2 – At the present time, the long term health effects of drugs in the drinking water are unknown.

Despite the lack of information about how we can expect these drugs to effect us, medical science is mainly concerned about the creation of “super bugs” from prolonged exposure to even low levels of antibiotics. The experts studying this issue are worried that these super microorganisms could become resistant to antibiotic treatment. If doctors can’t fight the sickness caused by these super bugs, many people could suffer and perhaps, die.

Fact #3 – Most of our municipal water treatment facilities are not presently equipped to remove prescription drugs in drinking water.

A vast majority of city water systems still use chlorine as their main method for treating water. Chlorine is a chemical disinfectant and not a filter, so it can do nothing to remove drugs in the drinking water. This means that our home water resources are at risk.

Fact #4 – It is possible to do something, right now, to protect you and your family from the potentially harmful effects of prescription drugs in drinking water.

You should know that there are plenty of efficient, home water purification

Sales of bottled water have sharply risen in recent years because of a growing public perception that bottled water is absolutely free from all impurities. But bottled water sold in the United States is not cleaner or safer than most tap water, states a scientific study conducted by NRD whose report was recently made public.

NRDC had conducted an exhaustive and elaborate study testing more than 1,000 bottles of 103 different brands of bottled water. Though most of the tested waters were found to be of pure quality, few brands were found to be contaminated. About one-third of the waters tested contained unacceptable levels of contamination — including synthetic organic chemicals, bacteria, and arsenic.

Another pertinent NRDC observation was bottled water regulations are not adequate to guarantee consumers of purity or safety. As bottled waters are covered by the FDA’s rules, they are subject to less rigorous testing and purity standards than city tap water. Bottled water is required to be tested less frequently than city tap water for bacteria and chemical contaminants.
Further there are no requirements for bottled water to be disinfected for parasites unlike the rules for big city tap water systems that use surface water sources. Thus bottled water is quite likely to pose a health threat to people with weak immune systems, such as aged people, infants, transplant or cancer patients and those with HIV/AIDS. The general public perception that tap water quality is less safe has led to the growth in bottled water sales. It is startling to know that about one-fourth of bottled water is actually bottled tap water, according to government and industry estimates. Quite often, the actual source of bottled water is not made clear and some bottled water labels are also ambiguous.
The NRDC report found that samples of two brands were contaminated with phthalates and in one case exceeding Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) standards for tap water.
NRDC has made some strong recommendations for improving the safety of bottled water:
- The FDA should set strict limits for contaminants in bottled water.
- The FDA’s rules should uniformly apply to all bottled water distributed nationally or within a state.
- Bottled water standards must be made as rigid as those applicable to city tap water supplies.
- Make it mandatory for water bottlers to disclose water source, treatments and other key information on the labels.
- An extra penny-per-bottle fee may be levied on bottled water to fund testing, regulatory programs, and enforcement at both state and national levels.
Since NRDC report, no major regulatory changes seem to have been made and bottlers have also not altered their procedures in any meaningful way. In a nutshell, most of us continue to drink bottled tap water after paying fanciful prices as bottlers are not required to list the source on the label. The long-term solution to drinking water problems is to ensure that NRDC recommendations are rigidly imposed or safe, clean, good-tasting drinking water comes from our taps that we may dispense with bottled water altogether.

Reverse osmosis water filtering systems can be valuable for removing many water contaminants, including dissolved solids and arsenic.

A reverse osmosis system works by forcing water through a semi-permeable membrane. Semi-permeable means that some molecules can pass through while others cannot. In theory, this forces clean water through the membrane, leaving all the contaminants behind. For most people and most circumstances, however, there are many better filters.

A reverse osmosis water dispenser tends to be bulky, taking up a lot of cabinet space under the sink, even while sharply limiting your pure water supply. And that’s probably the least of its drawbacks.

Here are the shortcomings of reverse osmosis water filtering systems:

1. They remove important trace minerals from drinking water, leaving the water strangely “flat” and tasteless. Even more important: natural water always contains trace minerals, and dissolved trace minerals in drinking water are a valuable source of magnesium, calcium and other nutrients. Other types of water filter can do an outstanding job of purifying drinking water and still leave trace minerals intact.

2. Reverse osmosis systems are extremely wasteful; all these systems waste much more water than they purify. The typical such filter creates three to five gallons of waste water for every gallon it filters.

3. They are also extremely slow. A reverse osmosis water dispenser can never keep up with high demand. The tank typically holds 1.5 to 2.5 gallons. Once this water is used up, you’ll be out of pure water, probably till the following morning.

4. Unlike faucet-mounted, counter top or carafe filters, they require plumbing modifications and should be installed by a professional. If modifying your plumbing and giving up cabinet space seems a reasonable tradeoff for an uncluttered kitchen counter and pure water, there are still lots of better choices.

5. Finally, a reverse osmosis water dispenser must be sanitized periodically with chlorine — a chemical that is highly undesirable in drinking water, despite its nearly universal use by municipal water systems.

For all these reasons, a reverse osmosis system is rarely your best choice for purifying your drinking water. There are highly effective water filters with none of these drawbacks.

Many people purchase a reverse osmosis water dispenser for their home in an effort to achieve clean and healthy drinking water. It is important for consumers to know that reverse osmosis water filtering systems have positive and negative attributes.

When you use a reverse osmosis water dispenser it will remove contaminants including dissolved solids and dangerous chemicals like arsenic. Reverse osmosis water filtering systems clean drinking water by forcing it through a semi-permeable membrane.

When the drinking water is forced through the semi-permeable membrane of a reverse osmosis water dispenser contaminants cannot pass through the filter with the water because they are too large.

Although reverse osmosis water filtering systems remove the majority of contaminants from drinking water they do have many drawbacks. For starters, reverse osmosis water dispensers are typically very large and take up a lot of the cabinet space under your sink once they are installed. There are many other filtration methods that use smaller devices than the reverse osmosis water filtering systems.

Reverse osmosis water dispensers are also extremely wasteful. During the purification process reverse osmosis water filtering systems waste more water than they actually purify. In general, the average reverse osmosis water dispenser wastes around 3 to 5 gallons of water for every 1 gallon of filtered water it provides filtered. Plus, reverse osmosis filtration systems are extremely slow and often are unable to keep up with the demand for water.

Possibly the most important thing to note about a reverse osmosis water dispenser is the fact that it removes the healthy minerals from water. Water is filled with essential, naturally occurring minerals that are vital for human health. Reverse osmosis water filtering systems remove these healthy, naturally occurring minerals during the filtration process.

The fact is, there are numerous other types of water filtration devices that filter water more efficiently. It is important to use a water filtration device that removes the unhealthy contaminants in drinking water but leaves the healthy minerals intact.

Reverse osmosis water filtering systems leave drinking water tasteless and flat without the minerals that make water so healthy for human consumption. The technology they use is outdated and inefficient.

It is unbelievable. A reverse osmosis water dispenser which was a top favorite once, seems to be gradually loosing its charm. With the growing awareness, people today are much more aware. If you have missed the details, here is a quick fact-sheet for you.

First things first. We need to understand how a reverse osmosis water dispenser works. It has a semi permeable membrane which has ultra fine pores on it. The contaminated water is forced to pass through this membrane. What is filtered and what is not, entirely depends on the molecular size of the contaminant.

Since water molecules are smaller than that of the pores, they pass through. Chemical and organic contaminants are larger in size, hence they are left behind. Thus they are separated from the water.

Fact 1: The pharmaceutical drugs which are a common contaminant have a small molecular size. The size is so small that they can easily pass through the porous membrane of a reverse osmosis water dispenser. Thus the water filtered from a RO is still contaminated and is still not pure.

Fact 2: The essential minerals like magnesium, sodium, iron found in the natural water have a large molecular size. Since their size is larger than that of the membrane, they are not able to pass through it, and are separated out from the water. Thus a reverse osmosis water dispenser ends up in de-mineralizing the water.

This de-mineralized water lacks all these minerals which are actually important for our health. Drinking water is one of the main sources of providing these minerals to our body. Consuming de-mineralized water results into mineral deficiencies, due to which various health problems occur. If you are consuming this water, you must take multi vitamins or supplements to meet the required content of these minerals in your body.

Moreover, since these minerals have been taken out, the water doesn’t tastes good anymore.

Solution: The easy and proven solution to this problem is to use a multi-stage water purifier. These filters work by a combination of ion exchange and carbon filtration techniques. They are efficient in removing all types of organic and synthetic pollutants from the water, even the pharmaceutical drugs. They also enhance the pH in the water.

Unlike RO filters, they do not separate out essential minerals, thus retaining the form water is available in the nature ? free from impurities and rich in minerals.

In conclusion, before selecting a filter, make sure to review and analyze the facts. The effective alternatives to reverse osmosis water dispenser are available. You just need to look for it and carefully pick the right water purifier.

Hot Water Dispenser? Not Essential but Convenient

Instant hot water dispensers can be a great convenience for those who need quick access for things like coffee or soup. However, it takes only a minute or two more to heat your water in the microwave. Accessories such as instant hot water dispensers are a fancy touch to add to your kitchen for extra convenience. There are many kitchen appliances to choose from that I have not mentioned here. Popular and smaller items such as blenders, coffee makers, espresso machines, mixers, egg timers and more are great items to own, though not essential. Whatever kitchen appliances you choose to purchase for your kitchen, make sure they are in high quality condition and will be long lasting for your convenience.

Fancy Water Dispenser Out there: Can You Imaging

Golf Bag Drink Dispenser

One of the most convenient ways of keeping a cool drink handy while playing golf is by using a golf bag drink dispenser. These drink dispensers are made to go inside a golf bag and even look like a golf club. The golf bag drink dispenser will keep drinks cool long enough to complete a round of golf, which is very good for a golfer who has spent several hours in the hot sun and needs a refreshing drink once finishing his or her game. The golf bag drink dispenser is very handy to use since it works with a pump, so it works like a fountain drink dispenser instead of having to pour the drink, which can be very inconvenient while playing golf. Along with keeping cold drinks cold, these golf bag drink dispensers also keep warm drinks warm, perfect for golfers who love to golf in cooler temperatures. This is very useful compared to having to carry a thermos full of coffee or hot chocolate around while playing golf. Having a hot drink available also makes the game more enjoyable since the golfer is not thinking about being cold! These drink dispensers do run on batteries, but one set should last the entire golf session, depending of course on how often it is used by the golfer, a back up set of batteries wouldn’t be a bad idea to have on hand. Anytime a person plans to spend a lot of time outside whether to play golf or any other activity, especially in warmer temperatures, it is important to stay hydrated with cool liquids, regardless of how the liquid is contained. Of course, there are many ways of keeping cool liquids nearby, whether carrying a bottle of a cool drink, using a backpack drink dispenser or for those that play golf, a golf bag drink dispenser.

Bottled Water Dispensers

Bottled water dispensers are an excellent choice for homeowners, who prefer to own and not rent a water dispenser. Currently available are also the terra cotta models, stone ware and mini coolers with hot and cold faucets. All the customer needs is to buy 5 gallon bottles or fill them up at home if a purifier is available. These dispensers are also available in the portable or counter top models. One major disadvantage with the bottled water dispenser is the maintenance. In the event the water cooler is not in regular use, or during summer months when the temperatures are higher, the clear fresh taste of bottled water might be difficult to achieve. Proper care of the bottled water and of the dispensers has to be a priority.

Hot Water Dispenser Installation

To install a hot-water dispenser, the sink top must have a hole that can receive the spout. Most hot-water dispensers are installed during kitchen remodeling in new sinks that have the proper number and configuration of holes. Though retrofits can be a little bit tricky, they’re not impossible. If your sink has a sprayer, you may be able to remove the sprayer and use the hole that it occupied. Or, if your sink has a separate spout for purified water, you can replace that one with a hot-and-cold model as explained above. Or check to see if the sink has an extra hole that hasn’t been punched out yet. In a real pinch, you can have a plumbing contractor drill a hole in stainless steel or porcelain–though you risk cracking porcelain.

Adding Versatility to the Faucets by Installing a Sink Sprayer

Turn off the water by closing the valves under the sink. Make sure the faucet can handle a sink sprayer. The faucet will have a capped opening beneath it. Remove the cap; Remove the soap dispenser or previous sprayer with a basin wrench; Insert the holder for the sprayer, and tighten the nut from beneath the sink. Feed the hose through the opening in the holder. Attach the hose to the connection under the faucet.

Repairing and Replacing a Kitchen Sink Sprayer

If you have a sprayer on your kitchen sink, you know how handy they are. If your sprayer is not working properly, you’re definitely aware of how handy they are, and you’re probably very annoyed that yours isn’t working anymore! When your sprayer is clogged, it is simple to repair. All you have to do is buy CLR or a similar product that removes build up. This is a pretty strong chemical, so it’s a good idea to wear gloves when you work with it. Dilute it according to the directions, using hot water. It’s a good idea to use a small glass instead of a plastic or metal container. Simply soak your sprayer head (still attached) in the solution for the recommended time, rinse it with hot water, then spray. It should be good as new!

Broken Sprayer Head and How to Replace the Sprayer Head and Hose

You might find it difficult or impossible to push the lever on your sprayer head. It might even be broken and constantly pushed down. If it’s getting harder and harder to push, it will eventually break. You might as well save yourself the inconvenience and replace it now. The whole spray head will unscrew from the plastic fixture that connects it to the hose. Take that off, and then remove the plastic gasket. If your sprayer “screams” or whistles when you use it, you probably have a hose problem. You can either buy just a replacement hose or the whole unit, including a new Sprayer head. If your sprayer is old, get the whole unit. It will save you time and trouble as the sprayer head is usually already attached. First, turn off the water supply to the kitchen sink. You will see little faucets under the sink. One is the hot water supply and one is the cold. Turn both all the way to the right. You will see where the sprayer hose is connected to the plumbing. Disconnect it. Next, look up to the place directly under where the sprayer is located on your sink. There should be a simple nut. Loosen it so you can remove the little sleeve that surrounds the sprayer opening. Take out the old hose. Replace it with the new one by feeding it through the sleeve. In some situations, you might have to disconnect the sprayer head to fit through the sleeve. Reconnect the sprayer to the plumbing, tighten the nut under the sprayer, and turn the water supply back on. Now test out your new sprayer, you do-it-yourself god or goddess!
